The lyrics were inspired by a personal story of the composer, Mosie Lister, who experienced a period of doubt and uncertainty in his faith after the tragic death of his young daughter. Mosie Lister once said, “I sweat blood over most of the songs I write. I work hard at making them what I think they ought to be. However, ‘How Long Has It Been’ was one of those rare exceptions that almost seemed to write itself. It came to me quickly and easily. The writing took little more than 10 minutes.”
