The Kingston Trio’s arrangement of Harlan Howard’s “Everglades” mimics the intro of “Bird Dog” by The Everly Brothers (a hit in ’58 at the same time as “Tom Dooley”), giving a nod to Don and Phil by changing the line ‘runnin’ like a dog through the everglades’ in the chorus to ‘runnin’ through the trees from the Everlys’ at the end.
