“Nothing but the Blood of Jesus” is a hymn written by Robert Lowry in 1876. Lowry introduced the hymn while preaching to the summer crowd in Ocean Grove, and a revival soon took place. Ira Sankey was in the crowd at the time and later claimed that Lowry’s hymn “immediately took possession of the people”. The hymn was written as a reminder of what truly saves us from sin: the blood that Christ shed for us on the cross.
