The lyrics were originally written in 1860, as a poem by Anna B. Warner, at the request of her sister Susan. It was included as part of a story meant to comfort the heart of a dying child. It was soon set to music by William Bradbury, who added the chorus
Anna’s family home was quite close to the United States Military Academy at West Point, in New York, in the era just before the Civil War. Each Sunday Anna taught Bible classes to the cadets. Her remains are buried in the military cemetery, and her family home is now a museum on the grounds of the United States Military
Anna and Susan Warner both died in Highland Falls, New York. Both were buried with full military honors and are the only civilians who are buried in the illustrious military cemetery of West Point. They are buried side by side and their graves face their beloved home on Constitution Island. Their home on Constitution Island is maintained by West Point as a museum dedicated to their memory
